An NYSC Certificate of Exemption is issued to eligible graduates who are not required to perform national service under the law and NYSC rules.
Exemption is different from exclusion. Full time graduates who fall within recognized exemption categories are processed for a Certificate of Exemption, while eligible part time graduates are generally processed for a Letter of Exclusion.
Main Exemption Categories
Official NYSC information identifies several exemption situations.
- A graduate who was over thirty years of age at the date of graduation or qualification
- A person who served in the Armed Forces of the Federation or Nigeria Police Force for more than nine months
- Specified staff of designated national security and intelligence services
- A person who has been conferred with a National Honour
Home Trained Graduates
For home trained graduates, the process begins with the Corps Producing Institution. The institution submits graduate records and approved results to NYSC, and the classification for service or exemption is processed through that institutional record.
NYSC states that home trained graduates collect Certificates of Exemption from their institutions rather than from an NYSC office.
Foreign Trained Graduates
Foreign trained graduates go through credential evaluation and physical verification. NYSC requires relevant academic credentials and international passport documentation.
Foreign trained graduates who are exempted are directed to collect their certificates through the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters process at the time communicated to them.
Corrections and Replacement
If there is an error on an exemption record, use the official correction process. For a lost certificate, NYSC lists supporting requirements such as a request, police report and court affidavit, with additional identification for foreign trained graduates.
NYSC explains that lost or burnt exemption certificates are not simply reprinted. A letter of confirmation may be issued instead.
Know Whether You Need Exemption or Service
Age is assessed in relation to the date of graduation or qualification, not merely the age at which you start the registration process.
If you are uncertain about your status, allow your institution or the NYSC evaluation process to classify the record rather than relying on an unofficial opinion.
Important: NYSC schedules, portal procedures, fees, allowances and document requirements can change. For 2027, confirm the latest information on the official NYSC website and portal before taking action.
